What is Ayurveda?
In Sanskrit, Ayurveda translates as the "science of life." This ancient, holistic medical system, which originated in India over 5,000 years ago, still continues to remind us how to lead a more balanced way of life by diving deeper into the understanding of ourselves. Although Ayurveda originated in India, it is recognized as "Universal Medicine" because anyone and any body can benefit from practicing Ayurveda. When comparing Western Medicine to Eastern Medicine, neither should be deemed better than the other - they can be used in collaboration with one another. Western Medicine is essential for acute cases such as medical emergencies and Eastern Medicine, such as Ayurveda, is preventative medicine. The more familiar one can become with their body-type and mind-type, the better he/she will be at knowing what kinds of foods and lifestyle practices are balancing for them.
Ayurveda illustrates that each and every living organism has a specific constitution that is unique and different than the next. The body is made up of three fundamental energies or characteristics, called "doshas," that govern our psycho-physiological tendencies. Through the understanding of the doshas, together we will discover which foods, practices, and styles of physical movement are balancing for you depending on your constitution, or mind-body type.
Ayurveda Health Consultations
An Ayurvedic Health Consultation is a health examination that embraces the whole, diving into the individuality of your specific state of balance or imbalance in your physical body, mind, spirit and senses. Ayurveda's eightfold examination includes pulse diagnosis, urine, feces, tongue, eyes, nails, general appearance and interrogation/medical history. Here, we embrace the whole, because division is the root cause of suffering.
After the initial Ayurvedic Health Consultation is completed, various Ayurvedic Therapies will be implemented to supplement your current practice. Ayurvedic Therapies include Abhyanga, Nasya, Karnapoorna, Breathwork, Meditation, Asana, Nutritional/Food Guidance, and Lifestyle recommendations catered to your specific mind-body type.
Ayurveda is a lifestyle. It reminds us that daily self-care rituals (e.g. meditating, dancing, retreating) are a way of celebrating the body, celebrating life.
